Abstract
In urethane anesthetized cats the superior semicircular canal was selectively stimulated and the electromyographic activities of the extraocular muscles were recorded, and functional interrelationships between the anterior canal and the extraocular muscles were figured out as follows: 1) Stimulation of a unilateral canal nerve caused excitation of the supero-medial muscle group (the superior oblique, superior rectus and medial rectus) and inhibition of the inferolateral group (the inferior oblique, inferior rectus and lateral rectus) in the ipsilateral eye. 2) In the contralateral eye, responses of the extraocular muscles were reversed; excitation of the infero-lateral group and inhibition of the supero-medial group were evoked by stimulation of the same superior canal nerve. Comparison between the experimental results of this functional study and those of the morphological study reported by Carpenter and his associates revealed considerable similarities in the canal-EOM relationship except a few instances.
